 Was born in Rio de Janeiro on February 1, 1938. She completed her primary, secondary, and classical education at the Sacré Coeur de Marie School, located at Rua Tonelero 56, Rio de Janeiro, between 1944 and 1956.

She attended the Business Course at Marymount College, Tarrytown, New York – until recently Fordham Foundation – between 1957 and 1958. She holds a Bachelor's degree in English from Santa Úrsula University of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, graduating in 1964. She worked as a private English tutor between 1964 and 1968. 

Maria Helena speaks English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian. She has traveled on official business for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to many countries. Countries where she has resided: United States, Italy, Portugal, and Paraguay.

CARREIRA DIPLOMÁTICA / DIPLOMATIC CAREER

Terminou o curso de Preparação à Carreira de Diplomata em 1969. Foi Terceira Secretária da Carreira de Diplomata em 1970; Segunda Secretária em 1973 e Primeira Secretária em 1975 até ser Conselheira em 1979. Serviu no Ministério das Relações Exteriores nas áreas política, administrativa, consular, econômica e cultural. Aposentou-se em 1996. É viúva do também Diplomata Luiz Alves da Fonseca Costa.

Os dois últimos cargos na Carreira Diplomática foram:  Coordenadora Executiva do Departamento Consular e Jurídico do Ministério das Relações Exteriores e Cônsul-Geral Adjunta do Brasil em Assunção, Paraguai.

She completed the Diplomatic Career Preparation Course in 1969. She was Third Secretary in the Diplomatic Career in 1970; Second Secretary in 1973 and First Secretary in 1975 until becoming Counselor in 1979. She served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the political, administrative, consular, economic and cultural areas. She retired in 1996. She is the widow of fellow diplomat Luiz Alves da Fonseca Costa.

Her two most recent positions in the Diplomatic Career were: Executive Coordinator of the Consular and Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Consul General of Brazil in Asunción, Paraguay.

PALESTRAS / LECTURES

Ao longo de sua trajetória, construiu sólida presença em palestras nacionais, no Paraguai e em Portugal, contribuindo para a disseminação do conhecimento e o fortalecimento do diálogo cultural. 

• Participou de diversos encontros no Clube do Livro de uma associação literária do Paraguai.

• Na Feira do Livro de Brasília, ministrou duas palestras sobre as figuras femininas e masculinas na obra de Machado de Assis, explorando as complexidades psicológicas e sociais construídas pelo autor. 

• Na Feira do Livro de Lisboa, levou ao público uma palestra sobre Machado de Assis, reafirmando a relevância do escritor.

• Realizou diversas palestras no Elos Clube e na Expressão Cultural de Teresópolis. Nesta última completou um ciclo de aproximadamente 30 palestras sobre a Segunda Guerra Mundial, ampliando o debate histórico e incentivando uma compreensão dos acontecimentos que marcaram o mundo. 

• Também realizou palestras na Academia Teresopolitana de Letras, dentre elas uma com o tema A Revolução dos Cravos de Portugal - 25 de abril de 1974, realizada em 26/09/2025:

Throughout her career, she has built a solid presence in national lectures, in Paraguay and Portugal, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge and the strengthening of cultural dialogue. 

• She participated in several meetings at the Book Club of a literary association in Paraguay.

• At the Brasília Book Fair , she gave two lectures on the female and male figures in the work of Machado de Assis, exploring the psychological and social complexities constructed by the author. 

• At the Lisbon Book Fair , she gave a lecture on Machado de Assis, reaffirming the writer's importance.

• She gave several lectures at the Elos Clube and at the Expressão Cultural in Teresópolis. At the latter, she completed a cycle of approximately 30 lectures on the Second World War, expanding the historical debate and encouraging an understanding of the events that marked the world. 

• She also gave lectures at the Teresópolis Academy of Letters , including one on the topic of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal - April 25, 1974 , held on September 26, 2025:

MÚSICA/ MUSIC

Maria Helena começou cantando quando foi Cônsul-Geral Adjunto em Assunção, Paraguai. Foi organizado um espetáculo com a participação de membros da Embaixada brasileira em Assunção e membros da colônia brasileira naquela capital. O espetáculo, gratuito, com músicas cantadas em português, espanhol e inglês, foi apresentado, durante uma semana, em um teatro local e, também, na Embaixada do Brasil, no aniversário do então  Embaixador.

Maria Helena began singing when she was Deputy Consul General in Asunción, Paraguay. A show was organized with the participation of members of the Brazilian Embassy in Asunción and members of the Brazilian community in that capital. The free show, with songs sung in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, was presented for a week in a local theater and also at the Brazilian Embassy on the then Ambassador's birthday.  

SABIÁS DA SERRA

O conjunto Sabiás da Serra nasceu por iniciativa de um grupo de amigos da terceira idade que reside em Teresópolis e compartilha o gosto pela música e pelo canto. Maria Helena é uma das idealizadoras do projeto. 

 Com repertório dedicado aos clássicos da Música Popular Brasileira e a grandes nomes da música nacional, o grupo organizou seleções musicais e se apresentou em auditórios do Vilanova Parque Hotel, em Teresópolis, Clubes do Rio de Janeiro, como o Clube Militar e o Fluminense Futebol Clube, em Hotel na cidade de Caxambu, Minas Gerais, no Instituto Cravo Albin no Rio de Janeiro e em casas de repouso para idosos em Teresópolis.  

Com o tempo, passou a ser convidado para se apresentar em diversas instituições culturais de Teresópolis. Destacando-se as homenagens nos espetáculos o Braguinha (o compositor João de Barros), Ary Barroso e Noel Rosa.

The Sabiás da Serra group was created by a group of senior citizen friends living in Teresópolis who share a love
of music and singing. Maria Helena is one of the project's founders. 

 With a repertoire dedicated to classics of Brazilian Popular Music and great names in national music, the group organized musical selections and performed in the auditorium of the Vilanova Parque Hotel,  in Teresópolis, clubs in Rio de Janeiro, such as the Military Club and Fluminense Football Club, in a hotel in the city of Caxambu, in the state of Minas Gerais, at the Cravo Albin Institute in Rio de Janeiro, and in retirement homes for the elderly in Teresópolis.  

Over time, the group was invited to perform at various cultural institutions in Teresópolis. The shows honored Braguinha
(the composer João de Barros), Ary Barroso, and Noel Rosa.
